********************* Tetapi insan dizalimi mati penuh penghormatan.

Winning women’s hearts, votes…

************************* In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful; blessings and peace be upon Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. ************************* Reflection The Declining Day (Al-'Asr) 1. By the declining day, 2. Lo! Man is in a state of loss, 3. Save those who believe and do good works, and exhort one another to truth and exhort one another to endurance. *************************** I noticed women close to my heart were not keen in reading Harakah. Perhaps it is true amongst women in general; and to overcome my curiosity I asked my wife. She said it was because of the paper’s contents which were almost 100 percent on heavy political issues, made the fairer sex shy away from it. ************** Almost half (more than 49 percent) of the voters in Malaysia are women, thus their contributions and votes are very significant and crucial to both Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional in the up coming 13th general election. Perhaps the team that could capture the hearts of women would have the edge. ****************** Regarding this, all parties in Pakatan Rakyat, especially PAS and its auxiliaries including those in the publishing houses such as Harakah have to think fast on how to win the hearts of women. Perhaps Harakah should take the lead in handling women’s issue because any shortcoming in winning women’s heart could jeorpodise the party’s and Pakatan Rakyat’s struggle to reform the political atmosphere of the country and of course to move on ‘the road to Putrajaya’. ******************** Perhaps PAS had moved forward in naming a few ‘Muslimat’ (women) leaders as it’s candidates in the last general election and during the Tenang (Johor) by-election in early 2011, it chose a local woman teacher, Puan Normala Sudirman; but there are still many loop holes that needed urgent remedy. ********************* Only women know women’s hearts and needs. Regarding this, perhaps Harakah has lagged behind, those hard political stuff has turned off the women-folk; they needed something dear to their hearts – do not forget the so called ‘main stream media’ including TV stations had special programs and slots on women. Sadly Harakah, does not have any…perhaps once a while there would be writings by ‘Muslimat’ top leaders and reports on women’s activities and gatherings. ********************** Regarding women’s activities, I received this emel from a reader, writing about the ‘Himpunan Aman 10,000 Wanita (Peaceful Gathering of 10,000 Women)’ which was held in Petaling Jaya on the 18th March in conjuction with the International Women’s Day. *********************** Thank you for “listening” (reading) to my expressions. Having mentioned your blog (Lanh14.blogspot.com), I suppose that is what I should also be doing. I hope that I am able to do so in the near future. Meanwhile, I would like to share a little more. Actually, I started writing this on the 21st of March but have just finished editing it today sitting in the open area designated “smoking zone” here at the “Daya-Tun-Mahathir” (read Dayabumi) building. ********************** My experience at the ‘Himpunan Aman 10,000 Wanita’. *********************** The march on Sunday 18th March from Masjid Bulat Section 14, Petaling Jaya was impressive. For it was from here that I witnessed it. (Another gathering was scheduled to leave from Taman Jaya.) Coincidentally, on the other side of the road was an Utusan building. Since it was a Sunday, no employees of Utusan were there to have a glimpse of this august parade to back its noble demands. ************************* Printed on a little sheet of paper they were as follows: 1. Kerajaan yang bebas daripada rasuah dan penyelewengan (A government free of corruption). 2. Akta gaji minimum (A decent living wage). 3. Kualiti kehidupan yang lebih baik (A better quality of life). 4. Hapuskan keganasan terhadap wanita dan semua gender (An end to violence against women and all genders). 5. Batalkan Akta Perhimpunan Aman 2011 (Repeal the Peaceful Assembly Act 2011) 6. Pilihan raya yang bebas dan adil (A free and fair election). ****************************** The demand, ‘Wanita menolak rasuah’ (Women against corruption) almost instantly brought to mind Dato’ Seri Shahrizat Jalil. Rhetorically speaking, or perhaps in principle, the entire Umno-BN leadership is committed in wanting to eradicate corruption. ************************ So, why was Dato’ Seri Shahrizat not here? Then I couldn’t help wondering if any members of Wanita Umno had quietly crept amongst the assembled multitude to secretly vent their sheer frustration against intra-Umno corruption (Extra-Umno corruption is yet another story). ********************** From the Masjid Bulat to the Padang Astaka, I learnt, as it was later announced, was a three kilometre journey. They had begun assembling a little before 1.30pm and at sharp 2.30pm the masses began their exodus. ********************** Many a Muslim participant I believe, had had completed their afternoon prayers at the mosque (masjid). I think it took almost an hour and a half before all finally arrived at the Padang Astaka. ************************ It was slow moving and some of the way either on-coming traffic had to be negotiated or at some stretches traffic flowing long the same direction had to be guided to squeeze into one lane. ********************** Traffic guidance was provided mainly by members of Jabatan Amal (of PAS) thanks to whom the traffic police personnel were left with nothing to do. *********************** Many aspects of this significant march and the subsequent gathering at the Padang Astaka can be elaborated about. Well, let me tell what got my attention from the very beginning. ******************* The gathering was very densely packed despite the heat of the day. The enthusiasm was high. At 2.30pm the drums began to sound accompanying the singing out or perhaps chanting of the demands listed out on the little sheet of paper that had been generously distributed. ********************** But in my mind, or perhaps in my imagination, I could swear I heard another sound. My mind had drifted elsewhere. ********************* It was at the scene from the Ten Commandments movie when the Israeli multitudes were given the “go” signal after the Passover, (when the Angel of Death Passed over Egypt and killed every first born, be it animal or even human, including the first born of the Pharaoh) beginning their exodus out of the land of oppression and slavery. ********************* And I looked hard to see who it was blowing the horn. Of course there was no horn. These weren’t the slave multitudes of Egypt, the children of Abraham. And so, the multitudes moved. The multitudes of 21st century Malaysia. *********************** Concerned womenfolk of our country, having gathered in numbers to express their dissatisfaction together with their rightful and legitimate needs. By right this indignant expression was meant for the ears of the ruling government. ********************** But we all know that the ruling government is very much a dead government, incapacitated by unbelievable depths of corruption and totally drowned in self-indulgence and self-interests. So, it is now up to the voting public to take note and listen with ears wide open to what the government has gone deaf to. *********************** Anyway, my imaginary trip to Goshen, the name of the land where the Israeli slaves worked, has given me this idea that perhaps a horn could be added into future processions and gatherings to complement the drum beat. It is after all such processional music that emboldens the heart. ************************ I will stop just short of suggesting a marching band (please don’t read that as a military band; the FRU will be there faster than the Fire Department responding to a fire). *********************** Let us just remember the Biblical exodus of the unarmed, defenceless ex-slaves with their women, children, supplies and livestock. ************************* And the Pharaoh then still sent his “FRU” after the defenceless fleeing multitude but was met with God’s “FRU”. – Your comrade in PAS.

The best, worst vehicle in the world…

*******************
In the name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate; blessings and peace be upon Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.

Reflection

There is no god but He,
Praise and glory to Him;
Far is He from having the partners
they associate unto Him. (Tauba 9:31)
********************

A friend sent me this emel; extracting an article from Kiplinger with a title ‘Obama Touts His Middle-Class Experience’.

At the White House Personal Finance Online summit on April 4, Kiplinger asked President Obama to respond to Mitt Romney's remarks the day before that, after his term in the White House, the President was out of touch with the personal finances of ordinary Americans. Here's how Obama responded:

"I went to law school and much of my college on scholarships. So did my wife. We were still paying off our student debt nine years after I had graduated from law school.

"Our first home was a modest condo, and I remember scraping together the down payment to purchase it and comparing interest rates. When Michelle and I first met, the car I was driving I think I bought for $500, and it had a big rust spot that allowed you to see the road on the passenger’s side, so I knew that my wife wasn’t marrying me for my money.”

When I read about Obama’s sad episode in life especially about his ‘rusty car’, I recalled what an ‘ustaz’ (religious teacher) who had told me about ‘the best vehicle in the world'. It was not the million ringgits Mercedes, Ferrari, Bugatti, Rolls-Royce or Lamborghini but the most often vehicle that took its owner to the masjid. And the worse vehicle is the one that has never taken its owner to to the masjid!

The best vehicle could be in the form of a rusty old car (as previously own by President Obama), an old motorcycle, a trustworthy bicyle or even an animal such as a horse, camel or donkey! But treat the animals well, for fear God, in respect of these dumb animals and ride them when they are fit to be ridden and get off them when they are tired.

“The shining and expensive Mercedes or BMW that you own actually had no value at all if they had never for once being used to take you to the masjid. What’s the point of having a good car when it failed ‘to serve’ you to the masjid? Actually, it was not the car’s fault but its owner who were too proud or ignorant to go to the masjid,” said the ‘ustaz’.

He also said, the best vehicle is that it is able to transport people other than its owner to masjid or its owner is willing to give ride to those on the same journey as him. And he is not reluctant to lend it to others to be used for the the benefit of others.

In a hadith, the Prophet was said to borrow a horse from Abu Talha for an important task. The hadith narrated by Anas bin Malik r.a. read: “Once the people of Madina were frightened, so the Prophet (peace be upon him, pbuh) borrowed a horse from Abu Talha called Al-Mandub, and rode it. When he (pbuh) came back, he (pbuh) said, “We have not seen anything (to be afraid of), but the horse was very fast (having an energy as inexhaustible as the water of the sea).” (Sahih Bukhari)

By having a good vehicle, a person is able to use it to the masjid for prayers and to attain knowledge. Attainting knowledge is very important because it would help him/her to know which is halal (permissible) and haram (forbidden) in Islam including in buying or acquiring a vehicle.

Knowledge is an obligation and an honour for the Muslim. The Muslim believes that exercising his mind and seeking knowledge and discovering the signs of Allah in the universe is an obligation, because of the saying of the Prophet s.a.w.: “Seeking knowledge is a duty to every Muslim.” (Bukhari)

Therefore the Muslim must continue to purse knowledge, as long as the breath of his life remains in his body. The fact that Allah has raised the status of those who have knowledge, and described them alone as truly fearing Him, should be enough to encourage the Muslim to apply himself to seeking knowledge. For He (Allah SWT) said: “…Those truly fear Allah, among His servants, who have knowledge…” (Qur’an 35:28)

No one truly fears Allah except those whose minds are enlightened enough to see the greatness and power of Allah manifested in the creation of the universe and all living things, and these are the people of knowledge. So He has preferred them over those who have no knowledge: “…Say: ‘Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know? It is those who are endued with understanding that receive admonition.” (Qur’an 39:9)

When one has knowledge on Islam, he knows that riba (usury) is haram. Buying cars using the riba system is haram. The word riba means excess increase or addition. Interpreted in Shariah, it means any excess compensation without any due consideration (consideration does not include time value of money).

The meaning of riba has been clarified in the following verses of the Quran: ‘O those who believe, fear Allah and give up what remains of riba if you are believers. But if you do not do so then be warned of war from Allah and his messenger. If you repent even now, you have the right of the return of your capital neither will you wrong nor will you be wronged.’ (Al-Baqarah 2:278-9)

Ali ibn Abu Talib r.a. said: “Every loan that draws interest is riba.”

So vehicles bought by using the riba system (conventional financing) would not give us the best vehicles, even though we used them to go the masjid. Conventional financing is forbidden in Islam due to its direct involvement with interest.

A conventional car-financing scheme is actually an Interest based loan given by the financial institution and interest is charged on that loan. Also, in conventional car-leasing schemes, the lease contract is not in compliance with Islamic Shariah and has riba and other un-Islamic elements in it.

Thus those with knowledge should go for the Islamic car financing as the ultimate solution. In some countries it is known as Car Ijarah, which meets the principals of Islamic Shari'ah. Ijarah is an Arabic term with origins in Islamic Fiqah, meaning to give something to rent.

Leasing is a contract whereby usufruct rights to an asset are transferred by the owner, known as the lessor, to another person, known as the lessee, at an agreed-upon price called the rent, and for an agreed-upon period of time called the term of lease.

Legally, the lease contract is not a, sale of the object, but rather a sale of the usufruct (the right to use the object) for a specified period of time. The sale of usufruct is permissible in Islam, as evidenced by the verses (translation of meaning by Yusuf Ali (1991)): Said one of them: 'O father, hire him on wages, for truly the best to employ is a strong and trustworthy man'. He said: `I intend to wed one of my daughters to you, on condition that you work for me for eight years, and if you complete ten full years, that will be a grace from you'. (28:26 27)

It is also established by the following hadith narrated by ' Ahmad, 'Abu Dawud, and Al Nasa.'i on the authority of Sa'd): The farmers during the time of the Prophet (pbuh) used to pay rent for the land in water and seeds. He (pbuh) forbade them from doing that, and ordered them to use gold and silver (money) to pay the rent.

Also, 'Ahmad, Al Bukhari and Muslim narrated on the authority of 'Ibn 'Abbas that the Prophet (pbuh) hired a man to cup (water) for him, and paid him his wages.

So to have the best vehicle, use it to the maximum to the masjid or other good places; let others travel in it, be please to lend it to others and of course at the beginning bought it according to principles of Islam. Insya-Allah (God willing) you be on the right path to be successful in this world and the Hereafter.

And if you own a vehicle but it had never taken you to the masjid once; then it is the worse vehicle in the world even though it was a Ferrari or BMW, what’s more you had bought it on riba-based loans!

Media massa: Izinkanlah persaingan sihat

****************
DENGAN nama Allah Yang Maha Pemurah Lagi Maha Penyayang; selawat dan salam ke atas junjungan besar Nabi Muhammad s.a.w.

Renungan

Bukan saja kehadiran media alternatif baru ditakuti, media alternatif lama seperti Harakah digeruni mereka.

Do not become like the Children of Israel…

******************
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful; blessings and peace be upon Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.

Reflection

The Declining Day (Al-'Asr)
1. By the declining day,
2. Lo! Man is in a state of loss,
3. Save those who believe and do good works, and exhort
one another to truth and exhort one another to endurance.
********************

RECENTLY the topics on Jews popped up and turned into a heated argument among certain quarters. There are some ‘hadith’ proving that our beloved Prophet, Muhammad s.a.w. had dealings with the Jews.

It is related that 'A'isha said, "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, bought some food from a Jew on credit and left his armour as security." (Narated by Al-Bukhary)

In another hadith narrated by Jabir bin 'Abdullah: A funeral procession passed in front of us and the Prophet stood up and we too stood up. We said, 'O Allah's Apostle! This is the funeral procession of a Jew." He said, "Whenever you see a funeral procession, you should stand up." (Bukhari Book #23, Hadith #398)

Based on these hadiths, it is not correct to say Muslims cannot have dealings including businesses with the Jews, but what Muslims are told is that they should not follow or imitate the brutality of the Jews; today in the form of the Zionist regime.

As Muslims we should obeyed all Allah SWT words in the Qur’an. Allah SWT has given us warning on this matter in one Qur’anic verse where He warns us not to become like the Children of Israel who disobey some of Allah SWT’s commandments in the Taurah, as stated in Ayah 85 Surah Al-Baqarah which reads; “…Then is it only a part of the Book that ye believe in, and do ye reject the rest? But what is the reward for those among you who behave like this but disgrace in this life? And on the Day of Judgment they shall be consigned to the most grievous penalty. For Allah is not unmindful for what ye do.”

In the following verse (Ayah 86 Al-Baqarah), Allah SWT says: “Such are those who buy the life of the world at the price of the Hereafter. Their punishment will not be lightened, neither will they have support.”

Are our lives truly guided by the Qur’an? Or are we good in taking what we think are good to us and ignoring what we feel bad? Regarding this, Allah the Almighty warns in Surah al-Baqarah 2:85, that to accept some part of the Qur’an and to reject some is to reject all of it. There is no room for partial acceptance in your relationship with the Qur’an; there cannot logical be.

Have a good look at Ayah (Ayat) 178 and 183 of Surah Al-Baqarah (Cow); why we fully accepted God’s commandments regarding fasting but we were reluctant to his laws of ‘qisas’. Ayah 183 reads; “O ye who believe! Fasing is prescribed for you, even as it was prescribed for those before you that ye may ward off (evil),” while Ayah 178 reads; “O ye who believe! Retalation is prescribed for you in the matter of the murdered; the freeman for the freeman, and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. And for him who is forgiven somewhat by his (injured) brother, prosecution according to usage and payment unto him in kindness. This is an alleviation and a mercy from your Lord. He who transgresseth after this will have a painfull doom.” (The Meaning of the Glorious Qu’an, translation by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall)

Muslims should have no reservations in implementing all of Allah SWT commands including hudud law and preventing ‘mungkar’ (sins). Having reservation on any of Allah SWT’s commands is a clear violation of our oath, the ‘syahadah’, that we will submit and obey all of Allah SWT’s commands.

Some scholars even say having such an attitude will nullify our ‘syahadah’ and is sufficient to make a person ‘kafir’ (a non-believer). And Allah SWT has given us warning on this matter in Ayah 85 Surah al-Baqarah (stated above) where Allah SWT warns us not to become like the Children of Israel who disobey some of Allah SWT’s commandments in the Taurah.

Regarding accepting Islam fully as the only way of life including non separation of politics and religion, I am glad to highlight this e-mel from a reader.

May this e-mail find you in peace.

Part one

I wish to refer to your previous article 'Seeking the ‘correct path’ in life'. The e-mail from your reader, a Malay female university student, which you shared was indeed very heart moving. Firstly, interestingly enough, her awakening to her own religion is inspired through the noble newspaper Harakah which, for the uninitiated, is basically a political publication, say like the Rocket, Suara Keadilan and others, or even if they be pro-Umno-BN.

As for me (a slight digression towards myself), even though I have been a Harakah reader for than two years now, trying to assimilate and accept previously unacceptable concepts such as non-separation between politics and religion is something that can only happen with the significant passage of time.

The truth about this non-separation is that it is actually true for all religions (and very much in Sikhism) but here in Malaysia this truth seems to have survived only in Islam. So, for all practical purposes I have decided to consider myself a non-Muslim Islamist if I have to, just to propagate the idea of this non-separation.

Okay, back to the girl. Of the many experiences she shared I think the most horrific was that of having to witness or to be in the know of the wild sex and pleasure life of some of her campus mates. I felt most tearfully grateful that she was saved from it.

Then there are other personal attitudes and views described that she had to deal with which completely split her mind into two such as praying to Allah and yet missing out on prayers, listening / reading the Qu’ran and then also listening to the latest music and so on.

These descriptions are so typical of all humans facing what might be generally referred to as a morality crisis. A morality crisis is mentally and emotionally very taxing leading to a sense of helplessness which then culminates in what she so aptly described as a severe depression. This was when she decided to run away from the hectic environment and the hypocrisy of other people.

A morality crisis, you might say, is one where one needs to organise one’s thoughts, words and deeds and compartmentalise them into the very black and white groups of good and evil. Then further soul searching brings up the not so obviously black and white areas, or perhaps the grey areas which need a lot more effort, maturity and understanding and also the need to be well versed with one’s religious teachings.

I think that you have indeed picked a very suitable e-mail with very meaningful content for the young generation to ponder upon.

Part two

On Sunday 25th March I heard the winding up lecture by PAS President Dato Sri Hadi Awang at the Kajang Town Council Hall building.

The hall was filled to capacity by anak Terengganu. His lecture was probably the longest (there were three other speakers) but he never seemed to run out of important and yet very interesting subject matter, even for me, a non-Malay listener (probably the only one), despite the Terengganu dialect that he sometimes used. (What a coincidence that the aforementioned Harakah reader whose e-mail you shared has her maternal routes in Terengganu.)

What really got my attention were the pain and the passion with which he was delivering himself. It took me some time to try to put this delivery into perspective as I asked someone sitting next to me whether Dato Hadi Awang was himself an anak jati. Then it all fell into place. He was also the former MB who lost his precious state to the Federal Umno goons. He was speaking with the pain of a 'mangsa penjajahan' (victim of domination).

I don’t have a recording of his speech so I will be quite vulnerable to mistakes and misquotes but certainly not to the spirit of his delivery.

So, carrying on, the next thing I felt was the change in my perception of the state of Terengganu. I had always thought it as a second-to-Kelantan PAS-state (even if it is currently ex-PAS), or perhaps a third after Kedah (currently PAS).

I can’t fully remember nor fully understand the depth of the political history of the state that he described but right now in my mind, the roots of Terengganu seem to be more PAS then those of Kelantan. For me this was a startling shift in paradigm.

This also includes my perception of the PAS President himself. Was it not just recently that some media headlines were highlighting how Tuan Guru Nik Aziz scolded Dato' Hadi for wanting to step down to concentrate on being a religious teacher?

There was anger in his voice as he mentioned certain Federal projects (maybe one or maybe more, I can’t quite recall) which were carried out using State funds. Then of course there is the infamous oil royalty issue.

He then went on to elaborate on the vast resources available. There were so many rivers in Terengganu, for instance, one of which could easily support a hydro-electric plant. Then there were the coastal towns which could become seaports with shipping routes right across the Pacific Ocean up until the Americas.

He then asked the sixty-four billion dollar question; why is Terengganu not competing neck and neck with Selangor. What gargantuan implications this question has. We may as well ask why aren’t all the thirteen states not competing neck and neck with one other? - Your comrade in PAS.

Ubah gaya hidup; cakap biar serupa bikin

*******************
DENGAN nama Allah Yang Maha Pemurah Lagi Maha Penyayang; selawat dan salam ke atas junjungan besar Nabi Muhammad s.a.w.

Renungan

Janganlah memuji dirimu

(An-Najm:32) - Hidayah Rabiulawal 1433/Februari 2012
****************

TERINGAT saya sewaktu menyertai bantahan kebaikan harga minyak di jalan raya berhampiran KLCC pada awal tahun 2006 dulu, peserta perhimpunan diikejar anggota FRU.

Mereka melarikan diri macam anjing kurap dibaling batu.

Perkhidmatan bas pinggir bandar amat teruk sekali.

Nampaknya, pemimpin 'auta' cakap berdegar-degar.

Tolonglah, jangan nak auta rakyat. Cakaplah serupa bikin, jangan cakap tak serupa bikin!

Sikap, lagak Yahudi makin jadi amalan

*******************
DENGAN nama Allah Yang Maha Pemurah Lagi Maha Penyayang; selawat dan salam ke atas junjungan besar Nabi Muhammad s.a.w.

Renungan

- Riwayat Al-Bukhari

Lalu baginda bersabda: “Tidakkah ia satu jiwa?” - Direkod oleh Bukhari (no: 1250) dan Muslim (no: 961)

Kita pun jangan tersilap faham.

Kenapa orang Malaysia kini berperangai macam Yahudi? Tetapi mereka menjajah pemikiran penduduk seluruh dunia.
